Our courses are taught by American Red Cross certified instructors and utilize the American Red Cross program for the respective courses. All courses meet the needs of schools, workplace, communities, as well as professional rescuers and healthcare providers. All courses include lectures, videos, demonstrations, practice and testing skill scenarios, and a written exam. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive certification(s) that are valid for two years.

Register for all classes in the Member Services Suite, Carmichael Gym, Room 1000. Cash, check, Visa and Mastercard are accepted.

Registration for classes scheduled for the Spring 2015 will open Monday, January 5, 2015.

Lifeguarding (Blending Learning Format)

Course length: 19.5 hours

The Blended Learning Lifeguarding course builds the same knowledge and skills as our traditional in-person training. The online format enables teens and young adults to complete interactive lessons and activities on their own time. Instructor-led sessions reinforce learning and emphasize skill building.

Prerequisites

  • Must be 15 years old on or before the last scheduled class session.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Must demonstrate the ability to swim front crawl and breaststroke. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Certification Requirements

  • Successfully complete the online sessions.
  • Attend and participate in all class sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  • Pass both the Section 1 – CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid and Section 2-Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with a minimum of 80 percent.

Lifeguarding Instructor

Course length: approximately 19 hours

The Lifeguard Instructor course trains candidates to teach basic levels of lifeguarding, lifeguard management, CPR/AED for the professional rescuer, administering emergency oxygen, blood borne pathogens training, disease transmission, and basic water rescue.

We provide a wide array of other courses including FA/CPR/AED, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Healthcare Providers, Bloodborne Pathogens Training, Administering Emergency Oxygen, and Recertification Courses for all offered courses. Courses can be requested throughout the year and must have a minimum of three participants to be offered.
