Tentative Itinerary
  • Depart NC State University at 9:00 a.m.
  • Tentative arrive at the Mountains to Sea trail, located near Falls Lake around 10:00 a.m.
  • Hike and explore all day, April 2.
  • Canoe Section 2 of the Neuse River, April 3.
  • Bike back to NC State on April 4. tentatively arriving on-campus at 4:00 p.m.
Highlighting the outdoor wonders that are right in our backyard, we will explore Falls Lake Recreation Area, the scenic Neuse River, and the Raleigh Greenway system connecting it all. Learn about the adventures that are to be had in Raleigh. This trip is an excellent way to re-energize while also becoming inspired by all the great opportunites around the triangle.

Tentative Itinerary
  • Leave at 9:00 a.m. from Carmichael Recreation Center.
  • Arrive at Trail Head at approximately 2:00 p.m.
  • Hike and set up camp.
  • Backpack Friday and Saturday
  • Depart on Sunday and tentatively arrive at NC State at 6:00 p.m.
The Linville Gorge, in Pisgah National Forest has often been called the "Grand Canyon of the East". During this trip we will hike over this amazing wilderness. The first few days of the trip will focus on giving participants the skills necessary to backpack. By the end of the trip, participants will have a chance to test our their backpacking skills as they become more self-sufficient. This trip is for the adventurous at heart and an amazing opportunity to explore beautiful wilderness on 4 hours away while meeting new friends at NC State

Spring Holiday: Sea Kayaking and Camping Thursday, April 2 to

Hammock's Beach State Park, NC

Pre-Trip Location: The Lakes (Room 1608), Carmichael Recreation Center

Tentative Itinerary
  • Meet at Carmichael Recreation Center at 9:00 a.m.
  • Spend a few days at Cedar Point practicing paddling skills.
  • Travel to Hammock's Beach State Park and expedition paddle out to Bear Island and camp along the sand dunes on the beach.
  • Drive back to Raleigh on Sunday. Tentative arrival to Carmichael Recreation Center of 6:00 p.m.
The Outer Banks have been hailed as one of the most beautiful places to paddle in the country. This trip is intended for beginner paddlers and more experience paddlers alike. We will spend the first few days learning how to efficiently paddle our boats and the necessary skills for expedition travel in a sea kayak. For the final days we will travel to Hammock’s Beach State park and expedition paddle through the sound and camp on Bear Island. Having time for both relaxing and adventuring this trip is the perfect way to spend your Spring Holiday

Lumber River Overnight Canoe Saturday, April 11 to

Tentative Itinerary
  • Leave Carmichael Recreation Center at 8:00 a.m.
  • Have lunch at the put-in.
  • Canoe to Lumber River State Park campground.
  • Set-up camp and cook dinner.
  • Pack up camp on Sunday and canoe from the campground to the take-out.
  • Arrive back at NC State approximately 5:00 p.m.
  • Allow approximately 30-minutes to unload vans and clean equipment.
Come explore one of the wildest rivers in North Carolina on this weekend canoe trip with University Recreation. The Lumber River is the only North Carolina black-water river to earn federal designation as a national wild and scenic river. During any given day on the Lumber River you may be able to look ahead of your canoe to see a great blue heron, belted kingfisher or spotted sandpiper flying low over the dark water.   • Depart Carmichael Recreation Center at 2:00 p.m.
  • Have Dinner on the road.
  • Arrive at Table Rock Parking Lot at approximately 9:00 p.m.
  • Spend all day Saturday climbing and rappelling.
  • Depart Sunday morningwith a tentative arrive at NC State at 6:00 p.m.
Linville Gorge is a climbing destination for climbers all over the United States and its only 4 hours away from NC State. Whether you are a first time climber or have already caught the climbing bug, the Gorge has something for you. This trip provides everything you need to climb in a beautiful outdoor setting including belay instruction, climbing technique and instruction, and a full weekend of endless climbing.

  • Morning instructional session followed by a ride.
  • Lunch.
  • More riding.
  • Arrive back at NC State approximately 4:00 p.m.
Come spend the day gaining new or improving on your current riding skills. The trails at Falls Lake Recreation offer something for every rider. During this trip, our trip leaders will share their knowledge and tips for improving your ride through fun games, activities, and of course riding some great single track trails.

  • 1-hour morning yoga session.
  • 2-3 Hour hike and lunch.
  • Arrive back at NC State approximately 4:00 p.m.
As school year begins to wind down and as finals stress hits full force, come join us on this relaxing adventure. After centering yourself through yoga at a beautiful outdoor location, we will explore the Beautiful Eno River. Our trip leaders will help explore this local treasure while also providing opportunities to learn about the local ecology and animal life at the Eno.

Course Description

The Wilderness Leadership Program (WLP) is open to NC State University students who are interested in working in the field of outdoor recreation and education and wanting to improve their leadership skills. This program is designed to provide participants the necessary tools to excel as an outdoor leader whether you want to become an Outdoor Adventures Trip Leader, work at a summer camp, or just want to improve your personal skills. Over this 6 day trip, participants can expect to improve their technical skills in backpacking and rock climbing as well as develop essential interpersonal, risk management, and leadership skills in order to effectively and safely lead people into the outdoors.
Application Details
In order to ensure that participants in this program are excited and interested in their personal and professional development trip participants must first apply and will then be invited to register for the program. To apply for WLP, please complete the WLP Application Form. Applications will be accepted from Monday, March 30 -Friday, April 10, 2015. All applications must be submitted electronically to David Crye at dncrye@ncsu.edu by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2015. Selected applicants will be sent an invitation to register for the program no later than Wednesday, April 15 by 6:00 p.m. via email.

Intro To Climbing Anchors Sunday, April 12 Indoor Climbing Wall
(Located on the Third Floor of The Carmichael Gymnasium)

Time: 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Ever wondered what exactly is keeping you up in the air besides your belayer? In Intro to Climbing Anchors, the Outdoor Adventures staff will not only provide you with an opportunity to get your climb on but also to learn and practice more advanced technical aspects of climbing. Specifically we will familiarize you with the skills involved in basic anchor construction and the equipment to make it work. Outdoor Adventures staff will introduce you to the knots, equipment, techniques, and safety skills to get rockin'. This workshop is geared toward intermediate climbers and will cover equipment, knots, safety practices, and climbing techniques. All participants should be yellow card belay certified or higher by the date of the program. Please note that climbing workshops do not provide belay instruction. Wilderness First Responder Course Sunday, May 10 - Saturday, May 16 Carmichael Recreation Center

          General Public, Faculty/Staff:$635

The Wilderness First Responder program is the ideal medical training for leaders in remote areas including outdoor educators, guides, military, professional search and rescue teams, researchers, and those involved in disaster relief. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical. It includes the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments for days and weeks if necessary.

NC State University Students, Faculty and Staff may also register in person at the Outdoor Adventure Equipment Rental Center located in Carmichael Recreation Center.

On Campus lodging is available through University Housing’s Conference and Guest Housing Guest Housing website for $42.50/night. Rooms have kitchenettes, wifi, cable, and are fully furnished. Guest rooms are available at Wolf Ridge Apartments located on Centennial Campus, about 2-miles from Carmichael Recreation Center.

Parking on campus is limited to permit parking only. Parking passes may be purchased from the Transportation Office upon arrival or may be purchased in advance through the Transportation Office online system (highly preferred). Once registered for the course participants will receive a link to obtain a parking permit.

Trips Equipment Rental: Take advantage of the Outdoor Adventure Equipment Rental Center for high-end gear for your next Adventure.


All trips are sold on a first-come/first-serve basis, and full payment or a deposit is due at the time of registration. Registration must be made in person at the Equipment Rental Center during regular operating hours.

In order to participate in the Trips Program participants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled student at NC State University
  • Have a valid Carmichael Complex Membership

Upon Registration each participant will complete the Expedition Behavior Agreement Form. Participants must read and agree to all trip policies before registering for a trip.

Participants will also receive a Participant Medical Form. This form must be completed in full and turned into the trip leaders at the Mandatory Pre Trip Meeting.

Pre-Trip Meeting

Pre-trip meetings are mandatory for all participants. Pre-trip meetings are required to ensure that all participants are adequately prepared for the trip. Personal equipment lists and additional important information are presented at pre-trip meetings. Participant Fitness Assessments and Water Comfort Tests are required for specific trips during the pre trip meeting as well.

All participants must bring their completed Participant Medical Form to the meeting. Participants who do not attend the pre-trip meeting will not be able to attend the trip, and will not receive a refund.


  • Participants must attend the Pre-Trip Meeting for their specific trip. If participants do not attend the meeting they will be dropped from the trip and no refunds will be given.
  • Participants must pass the Fitness Assessment and/or Water Comfort Test if required for trip.
  • Participants must travel in Outdoor Adventures’ vehicles. Driving separately, meeting the group or being picked up is not allowed
  • Outdoor Adventures trips are university related functions and should be treated as such. Alcohol, tobacco, and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. Participants who violate these rules are subject to removal from the trip and transportation back to NC State will be at the participant’s expense.

Refund Guideline

Refunds are not given for any reason unless trip is canceled by Outdoor Adventures.
