This year is predicted to be an awesome weather, and University Recreation wants to help you enjoy the wintry mix. We will explore the winter wonders of Grandfather Mountain, and our experienced leaders will help you stay warm and dry as you travel through the winter mountains. No experience is necessary.
No hiking boots? We've got your covered. Warm jackets and fleeces are also available to make sure you stay warm while enjoying the wintery wonderland.

  • Meet at Carmichael Recreation Center at 6:00 a.m.
  • Wake up Sunday morning and start paddling on the Suwannee River
  • Continue to paddle the Suwannee River Monday through Thursday, paddling between 15-20 miles per day and camping on sandbars.
  • Wake up on Friday and travel to Crystal River to enjoy the beautiful water and manatees.
  • Depart on Saturday, with a tentative on-campus arrival time fo 7:00 p.m.
  • Allow about 1-hour for gear cleanup and organization
Join University Recreation for a truly memorable Spring break experience. This year we will be heading to the Suwannee River in Florida, camping on the river's famous white-sand beaches each night, and observing amazing wildlife during the day. our journey will take us down the historical river where we will observe 19th century cotton plantations as well as breathtaking sunsets.

We will conclude our river trip by stopping at Crystal River, Florida, where we will snorkel with one of natures most amazing mammals, the manatee, in prestine waters. No experience is necessary.

Did you know that Raleigh offers some of the greatest mountain bike opportunities in North Carolina? Lake Crabtree County Park offers over 7-miles of single track mountain bike trails which surround the scenic Lake Crabtree. This trip is perfect for anyone who is interested in trying out mountain biking for the first time, as well as, riders who are looking for an excuse to get out an meet new friends. Experienced Outdoor Adventures staff will help get you oriented to the basics of mountain biking.

  • Bike back to NC State on April 4. tentatively arriving on-campus at 4:00 p.m.
Highlighting the outdoor wonders that are right in our backyard, we will explore Falls Lake Recreation Area, the scenic Neuse River, and the Raleigh Greenway system connecting it all. Learn about the adventures that are to be had in Raleigh. This trip is an excellent way to re-energize while also becoming inspired by all the great opportunites around the triangle.

The Linville Gorge, in Pisgah National Forest has often been called the "Grand Canyon of the East". During this trip we will hike over this amazing wilderness. The first few days of the trip will focus on giving participants the skills necessary to backpack. By the end of the trip, participants will have a chance to test our their backpacking skills as they become more self-sufficient. This trip is for the adventurous at heart and an amazing opportunity to explore beautiful wilderness on 4 hours away while meeting new friends at NC State

  • Travel to Hammock's Beach State Park and expedition paddle out to Bear Island and camp along the sand dunes on the beach.

The Outer Banks have been hailed as one of the most beautiful places to paddle in the country. This trip is intended for beginner paddlers and more experience paddlers alike. We will spend the first few days learning how to efficiently paddle our boats and the necessary skills for expedition travel in a sea kayak. For the final days we will travel to Hammock’s Beach State park and expedition paddle through the sound and camp on Bear Island. Having time for both relaxing and adventuring this trip is the perfect way to spend your Spring Holiday

Come explore one of the wildest rivers in North Carolina on this weekend canoe trip with University Recreation. The Lumber River is the only North Carolina black-water river to earn federal designation as a national wild and scenic river. During any given day on the Lumber River you may be able to look ahead of your canoe to see a great blue heron, belted kingfisher or spotted sandpiper flying low over the dark water. Linville Gorge is a climbing destination for climbers all over the United States and its only 4 hours away from NC State. Whether you are a first time climber or have already caught the climbing bug, the Gorge has something for you. This trip provides everything you need to climb in a beautiful outdoor setting including belay instruction, climbing technique and instruction, and a full weekend of endless climbing.

Course Description

The Wilderness Leadership Program (WLP) is open to all NC State University students who are interested in working in the field of outdoor recreation and education. This program is designed to provide participants the necessary tools to excel as an outdoor leader whether you want to become an Outdoor Adventures Trip Leader, work at a summer camp, or just want to improve your personal skills. Over this 6 day trip, participants can expect to improve their technical skills in backpacking and rock climbing as well as develop essential interpersonal, risk management, and leadership skills in order to effectively and safely lead people into the outdoors.
This program serves as a pre-requisite to apply for the Assistant Trip Leader position with University Recreation. See the University Recreation Student Employment page on the website for more information.

Come join Outdoor Adventures at the Indoor Climbing Wall for an afternoon of climbing and instruction.
Have you ever thought, “Gee, I wish I could climb like Sasha DiGiulian or Chris Sharma.” or “I don’t understand why I keep falling off this wall?” Well then this is the clinic for you. This clinic is geared toward beginning climbers wanting to learn more about the fundamentals of climbing movement and will cover equipment and climbing techniques that will allow you to grow stronger and more confident as a climber. You will also have the opportunity to climb multiple routes on the Carmichael Gym rock wall and practice the skills that you learn. All equipment for the program is provided.

This workshop is geared toward all ability levels but a Yellow or Blue Belay Card is strongly preferred.

Time: 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Join the Outdoor Adventures and Fitness staff as we learn and experience various fitness regimens that will PUMP UP YOUR CLIMBING! With workouts focused on things like “POWER AND EXPLOSIVENESS”, “Muscular Strength”, “Endurance”, and “Balance” the University Recreation Staff will take you through fun circuit workout routines and climbing drills that are focused on increasing your climbing endurance, technique, and strength.

GripFest Climbing Competition Saturday, February 28 Indoor Climbing Wall

Make sure to register for the 3rd Annual  Gripfest. This fun and exciting competition is for all ranges of climbers from beginner to advanced. Throughout the competition there will be fun mini-challenges to participate in while you “throw down” on as many routes as you can. Sign up early to guarantee your spot.
Space is limited to the first 40 Registrations. Register at the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center. All registrants will receive a free Climbing Competition T-shirt and have chances to win other great prizes.

Women On Rocks Sunday, March 22 Indoor Climbing Wall

Rock climbing: a “manly” sport that you’ve always wanted to try but you never thought you had the strength to do it. Think again. Some of the best climbers in the world are women and they were once just like you. Come learn to climb with other women in a safe, comfortable and supportive atmosphere with Outdoor Adventures’ female instructors!This workshop is geared toward novices and will cover equipment, knots, safety commands, and climbing techniques as well as some Women of Rock Climbing History. All equipment is provided.

No prior climbing experience is needed. Please note that climbing workshops do not provide belay instruction. Check out our Belay Clinics if you are interested.

Kayaking Instruction Series

This is a three series clinic. Participants may sign up for one, two or all three sessions.
Kayaking 101- Kayaking Fundamentals

In Kayaking 101 we will focus on the specifics of paddling gear and break down all you need to know to get started paddling. We will break down boat anatomy and go over some basic self -rescue techniques to keep you safe in the water. Finally we will break down some of the most basic paddling strokes so you can begin to paddle with style.
Kayaking 201- Paddling Safety and Rescues

In Kayaking 201 we will build on the skills from Kayaking 101 and add some more! This clinic we will review paddling strokes and add some more advance strokes. After all, the first part of paddling safety is being able to control your boat. Finally we will end on partner rescue techniques so you can keep you and your paddling partners safe while on the water.
Kayaking 301- The Ultimate Rescue: Rolling

In Kayaking 301, we will focus our efforts on the infamous kayak roll. The kayak roll is a great way to boost confidence and self-reliance while on the river. This clinic will build on the fundamentals we learned in Kayaking 101 and 201 and hopefully learn all the secrets that help us right our boats if we find ourselves upside down in the water.

Intro To Climbing Anchors Sunday, April 12 Indoor Climbing Wall

Ever wondered what exactly is keeping you up in the air besides your belayer? In Intro to Climbing Anchors, the Outdoor Adventures staff will not only provide you with an opportunity to get your climb on but also to learn and practice more advanced technical aspects of climbing. Specifically we will familiarize you with the skills involved in basic anchor construction and the equipment to make it work. Outdoor Adventures staff will introduce you to the knots, equipment, techniques, and safety skills to get rockin'. This workshop is geared toward intermediate climbers and will cover equipment, knots, safety practices, and climbing techniques. All participants should be yellow card belay certified or higher by the date of the program. Please note that climbing workshops do not provide belay instruction. Registration

All trips are sold on a first-come/first-serve basis, and full payment or a deposit is due at the time of registration. Registration must be made in person at the Equipment Rental Center during regular operating hours.

In order to participate in the Trips Program participants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled student at NC State University
  • Have a valid Carmichael Complex Membership

Upon Registration each participant will complete the Expedition Behavior Agreement Form. Participants must read and agree to all trip policies before registering for a trip.

Participants will also receive a Participant Medical Form. This form must be completed in full and turned into the trip leaders at the Mandatory Pre Trip Meeting.


Pre-Trip Meeting

Pre-trip meetings are mandatory for all participants. Pre-trip meetings are required to ensure that all participants are adequately prepared for the trip. Personal equipment lists and additional important information are presented at pre-trip meetings. Participant Fitness Assessments and Water Comfort Tests are required for specific trips during the pre trip meeting as well.

All participants must bring their completed Participant Medical Form to the meeting. Participants who do not attend the pre-trip meeting will not be able to attend the trip, and will not receive a refund.


Guidelines

  • Participants must attend the Pre-Trip Meeting for their specific trip. If participants do not attend the meeting they will be dropped from the trip and no refunds will be given.
  • Participants must pass the Fitness Assessment and/or Water Comfort Test if required for trip.
  • Participants must travel in Outdoor Adventures’ vehicles. Driving separately, meeting the group or being picked up is not allowed
  • Outdoor Adventures trips are university related functions and should be treated as such. Alcohol, tobacco, and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. Participants who violate these rules are subject to removal from the trip and transportation back to NC State will be at the participant’s expense.

Refund Guideline

Refunds are not given for any reason unless trip is canceled by Outdoor Adventures.
