Did you know that Raleigh offers some of the greatest Mountain Bike opportunities in the state? Lake Crabtree County Park offers over 7 miles of single track mountain bike trails which surround the scenic Lake Crabtree. This trip is perfect for anyone who is interested in trying out Mountain Biking for the first time as well as those riders who are looking for an excuse to get out and meet new friends. There is something for every biker at Crabtree.

As school begins to come into full swing, come join us on this relaxing adventure. After centering yourself through some Yoga, we will explore the beautiful Eno River. Our trip leaders will help explore this local treasure while also providing opportunities to learn about the local ecology and animal life at the Eno.

Price includes a 1 hour yoga session, guided hike in Eno, lunch, and transportation.

Located right in our backyard, the beautiful Neuse River flows from Falls Lake all the way to the Outer Banks! During this trip we will paddle away from the hustle and bustle of city life and into a beautiful cypress forest. And who knows, we may see wildlife such as eagles, river otters, beavers, hawkes, snakes, fish, and great blue herons. This Paddle is roughly 8 miles long and is appropriate for all levels of paddlers.

  • Canoe Section 2 of the Neuse on Oct 10
  • Bike home back to NC State on Oct 11, arriving back to campus at around 4:00 p.m.
Highlighting the outdoor wonders that are right in our backyard, on this trip we will explore at Falls Lake, the Neuse River and the Raleigh Greenways. Come learn about the adventures that are to be had right in our neck of the woods. This trip is a great way to get re-energize for the semester while also getting inspired by all the opportunities around the triangle.

  • Practice paddling skills at Cedar Point
  • Travel to Hammocks Beach State Park for some more amazing paddling
  • Drive back to Raleigh on Sunday and we will be back at Carmichael Recreation center at around 6:00 p.m.
The Outer Banks have been hailed as one of the most beautiful places to paddle in the country. This trip is intended for beginner paddlers and more experience paddlers alike! We will spend the first few days learning how to efficiently paddle our boats and the necessary skills for expedition travel in a sea kayak. For the final day we will travel to Hammock Beach State park. Having time for both relaxing and adventuring this trip if the perfect way to spend your Fall Break.

The Linville Gorge has often been called the “Grand Canyon on the East.” During this trip we will hike over this amazing wilderness. The first few days of the trip will focus on giving participants the skills necessary to backpack. By the end of the trip, participants will have a chance to test out their backpacking skills as they become more self-sufficient. This trip is for the adventurous at heart and an amazing opportunity to explore beautiful Wilderness only 4 hours away.

  • Leave at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday and drive to the Lumber River put in.
  • Have lunch at the put in.
  • Canoe to Lumbar River State Park campground.
  • Set up camp and cook dinner.
  • On Sunday, pack up camp and canoe from the campground to the take out.
  • Arrive back at NC State approximately 5 p.m.
  • Allow about 30 minutes to unload vans and clean equipment.
Come explore one of the wildest rivers in North Carolina on this weekend canoe trip with Outdoor Adventures. The Lumber River is the only North Carolina black-water river to earn federal designation as a national wild and scenic river. During any given day on the Lumbar River you may be able to look ahead of your canoe to see a great blue heron, belted kingfisher or spotted sandpiper flying low over the dark water. Hike and Cave. Spend Saturday hiking Elk Knob- a recently made State Park right outside of Boone, NC. After beautiful views above ground, we will see beautiful views underground. No experience is necessary for this trip and our experienced trip leaders will teach about the unique ecosystem that lives without sunlight.

  • Spend one night camping at Collier Seminole State Park
  • Spend 6 days paddling in the wilderness of Everglades National Park
  • Spend one more night at Collier Seminole State Park
  • Leave Florida and arrive back to NCSU around 7:00 p.m.
The Everglades of South Florida contain some last wilderness in the county that has not been developed by modern day humans. The River of Grass as it is called provides a unique environmental climate where fresh and salt water meets. This unique environment attracts millions of birds and other wildlife such as manatee, alligators and sea turtles. We will canoe from the fresh water back bays to the Gulf of Mexico. No experience is necessary for this trip. Our trip leaders are extremely experienced (over 200 days paddling in this area) and will show participants the well-kept secrets of the Everglades.

Lodging: Participants will be staying on the ski mountain in amazing 3 or 4- bedroom condos, which feature full kitchens, a balcony and easy and quick access to the slopes! All rooms will be filled with 6-10 participants. Room assignments are on a first come, first serve basis when you register for the trip.

Intro to Skiing Lesson: Skiing for the first time or need a quick refresher on your skills? Outdoor Adventure staff will provide some basic instruct for you on the first day of skiing. This short lesson will help introduce you to the sport of skiing. Disclaimer: this lesson will not be an all inclusive, in depth training on how to ski. Professional ski or snowboard instruction is available at the resort for an additional fee paid at the resort.

Not Included: Meals, Professional Ski/Snowboard Instruction (available for an additional fee at the resort). There are many food options at the ski resort and all condos have full kitchens available.

  • Meet at Carmichael Recreation Center at 7:00 a.m. and begin drive to resort stopping for lunch on the way

Come join Outdoor Adventures at the University Recreation Climbing Wall for an afternoon of climbing and instruction.

This clinic is geared toward beginning climbers wanting learn more about climbing fundamentals and will cover equipment and climbing techniques that will allow you to grow stronger and more confident as a climber. You will also have the opportunity to climb multiple routes on the Carmichael Gym climbing wall and practice the skills that you learn. All equipment is provided and this workshop is offered free of charge.

*All participants should be yellow card belay certified or higher by the date of the program. Please note that climbing workshops do not provide belay instruction. Check out our Belay Clinics if you are interested.
Bike Maintenance Clinic September 23

Did you know that a human powered bicycle is the most efficient form of transportation on Earth? This along with recent rising gas prices have helped popularize bike commuting. Join Outdoor Adventures for a bike maintenance clinic so you can keep your ride on the road or dirt. We’ll teach you the skills for basic repair and maintenance, as well as address any specific issues participants bring up. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes, however if you don’t own one, don’t worry, we’ve got some you can test your new skills on.
Late Night at the Wall September 26

Come out to climb at the University Recreation climbing wall on Friday the 26th. Starting at 8 p.m., we will be having a presentation by NC State graduate student Matthew Morriss. Matthew will be presenting on his amazing adventure to a remote corner of the Alaskan Mountain Range where he intends to put up several first ascents. Get inspired and learn how you can make your dreams come true.

After the great presentation make sure to stay for games, food, and fun at the climbing wall. Defy gravity and win prizes in the mini competitions, great music, videos, and much more!

Climbing and rentals are completely free, and the fun lasts from 9 p.m. - 12 a.m. If you're new to the wall, there will be staff available all evening to show you the ropes.
Backcountry Cooking October 14

Rocks 201 October 19

Rock Climbing 201 provides you with an opportunity not only get your climb on but also to learn and practice more advanced technical aspects of climbing. Join Outdoor Adventures as we familiarize you with the skills involved with climbing and rappelling, ascending, basic anchor construction, and the equipment to make it work. Outdoor Adventure staff will introduce you to the knots, equipment, techniques, and safety skills to get rockin!

This workshop is geared toward intermediate climbers and will cover equipment, knots, safety practices, and climbing techniques in addition to the opportunity to climb multiple routes on the University Recreation climbing wall. All equipment is provided and this workshop is offered free of charge.

Join Outdoor Adventures and Fitness staff as we learn and experience various fitness regimen that will boost your strength, flexibility, and endurance. University Recreation Fitness staff will take you through fun circuit workout routines that are focused on increasing your climbing strength while the Rock Wall staff will test your strength on the wall to work on your climbing endurance, technique and strength.

This workshop is geared toward all ability levels but a Yellow or Blue Belay Card is strongly preferred.

Kayaking 101- Kayaking Fundamentals: Oct, 20
In Kayaking 101 we will focus on the specifics of paddling gear and break down all you need to know to get started paddling. We will break down boat anatomy and go over some basic self -rescue techniques to keep you safe in the water. Finally we will break down some of the most basic paddling strokes so you can begin to paddle with style.

Kayaking 201- Paddling Safety and Rescues: Oct, 27
In Kayaking 201 we will build on the skills from Kayaking 101 and add some more. This clinic we will review paddling strokes and add some more advance strokes. After all, the first part of paddling safety is being able to control your boat. Finally we will end on partner rescue techniques so you can keep you and your paddling partners safe while on the water.

Kayaking 301- The Ultimate Rescue: Rolling: Nov, 3
In Kayaking 301, we will focus our efforts on the infamous kayak roll. The kayak roll is a great way to boost confidence and self-reliance while on the river. This clinic will build on the fundamentals we learned in Kayaking 101 and 201 and hopefully learn all the secrets that help us right our boats if we find ourselves upside down in the water.

 

Trips Equipment Rental: Take advantage of the Outdoor Adventure Equipment Rental Center for high-end gear for your next Adventure.

Registration 

All trips are sold on a first-come/first-serve basis, and full payment or a deposit is due at the time of registration. Registration must be made in person at the Equipment Rental Center during regular operating hours. 

In order to participate in the Trips Program participants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled student at NC State University
  • Have a valid Carmichael Gym Membership

Upon Registration each participant will complete the Expedition Behavior Agreement Form. Participants must read and agree to all trip policies before registering for a trip.

Participants will also receive a Participant Medical Form. This form must be completed in full and turned into the trip leaders at the Mandatory Pre Trip Meeting.

Pre-Trip Meeting

Pre-trip meetings are mandatory for all participants. Pre-trip meetings are required to ensure that all participants are adequately prepared for the trip. Personal equipment lists and additional important information are presented at pre-trip meetings. Participant Fitness Assessments and Water Comfort Tests are required for specific trips during the pre trip meeting as well. 

All participants must bring their completed Participant Medical Form to the meeting. Participants who do not attend the pre-trip meeting will not be able to attend the trip, and will not receive a refund.

Policies

  • Participants must attend the Pre-Trip Meeting for their specific trip.  If participants do not attend the meeting they will be dropped from the trip and no refunds will be given.
  • Participants must pass the Fitness Assessment and/or Water Comfort Test if required for trip.
  • Participants must travel in Outdoor Adventures’ vehicles. Driving separately, meeting the group or being picked up is not allowed
  • Outdoor Adventures trips are university related functions and should be treated as such. Alcohol, tobacco, and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. Participants who violate these rules are subject to removal from the trip and transportation back to NC State will be at the participant’s expense.

Refunds are not given for any reason unless trip is canceled by Outdoor Adventures.
